Lester Gate is the
entrance to the Royal Palace built in 1895, during the Khemraj dynasty. |

THE
ROYAL PALACE
The palace was built in the
era of the then King Khem Sawant Bhosale III (1755-1803). It will be converted to Heritage Hotel
and will be a major tourist
attraction.
Palace consists of the Residential Palace, Darbar Hall,
Administrative
Hall. A part of the Administrative Hall will be converted into a luxury hotel.
The rooms will have beautiful view of lake.

MOTI TALAV
The pearly lake is
surrounded by green hills and a belt of mango and palm trees. As the
town is developed around this city, it is a good example of peripheral city in India.
Boating and
water sports facilities, jogging tracks, lamp posts, fountains etc lure
the public.

CHITNIS WADA
The Chitnis Wada was built in 1836. It is located in Juna Bazar Sawantwadi.

MATHI
The Mathis are the tombs
of the Royal family.The area is hence known Mathewada and marks
the importance of these Mathis.
The "jatra" of Sawantwadi takes place in
Mathewada near the temple of Bhagirathi. It is said that the jatra is to
entertain the late members of the Royal Family. |
SAWANTWADI MARKET
Tuesday is the Market Day of Sawantwadi. The market is situated in
the heart of the city. Whole of the city comes alive with the frenzied
activities in the market. It is also the centre for communication for
the city dwellers.

ATMESHWAR TALI
300 years old Tali
emphasizes presence of divine power. It is said that a disciple of
Lord Shiva, named Giri, was once very thirsty and unable to find any
water struck the
trishul in the ground. The three holes thus made started oozing with
water. The small lake formed by this water is called as
Atmeshwar Tali.
It is unique water tank where water rises 10 fts. above ground level. It
gets filled up to the brim and overflows. This Tali is also associated
with Atmeshwar Mandir. This is also unique example where two Shiv-Lings
are placed in one and only temple. It is the blessings of God to Sawantwadi
and its citizens. |
VITTHAL MANDIR
Formerly known as the "Padgaonkars'
Vithoba Mandir", this temple is a place of great devotion for the entire
city. Its 130 feet crest enchants the public and is visible from all the
corners of the city.
A small and pleasant "Maruti
mandir" is situated beside it. |
HANUMAN MANDIR
The Hanuman Mandir is situated on the top of the hill
Narendra and offers a marvellous view of the city. Narendra Garden is
located near this temple. People of Sawantwadi are deeply associated with
this religious place. It is also a popular picnic spot. |
JAGANNATHRAO BHONSALE GARDEN & TOURIST RECEPTION
CENTRE
A beautiful garden named after
the veteran freedom fighter late Jagannathrao Bhonsale, is spread over
area of 5 acres. The garden is divided into three parts. First part
consists of beautiful landscaped lawns, tree plantation, water fall,
fountains etc. The second part consists of Children Park. The third part
consists of tourism related facilities like restaurant etc. Tourist
Reception Centre has been developed by MTDC Ltd. near the Garden, on
the bank of the lake. The Tourist Reception Centre consists of
tourist information centre, toilet facilities, communication centre,
resting room, overnight accommodation etc. |
SHILPAGRAM
Shilpagram is a project
sponsored by Govt. of India and implemented by MTDC Ltd. It is a village
of crafts where local manufacturers make and sell handicraft items
like Ganjifa cards, jewelry
boxes, traditional lacquerware, bamboo craft, earthen pottery, hand-knit bags and
purses. The tourists can actually watch the manufacturing of these
articles. There are facilities like accommodation,
amphitheatre for perform local arts.
The tourists can also
benefit from the lake side resorts and a restaurant near Shilpagram.

RAGHUNATH MARKET
This is also an old structure
built in 1891 and is owned by Municipal Council. The said structure will be
transferred to MSSIDC to be run as Govt. Emporium. The emporium will
have local handicrafts and jewelry for sale.

KOLGAON DARWAJA
This is about a 200 year old
structure and was the entry gate to Sawantwadi. It has been renovated to
display pictures and photographs of historical events. |
